Linda Catlin Smith and Amadeus Regucera, Guest Composers 2020
James Baker, Music Director Conference Ensemble
Ten Fromm Foundation Composer Fellows are selected to participate in intensive seminars, rehearsals, workshops and public colloquia with Artistic Director Kurt Rohde and distinguished 2020 Guest Composers Linda Catlin Smith and Amadeus Regucera. Each Fromm Foundation Composer Fellow has a work publicly performed and professionally recorded by the Conference Ensemble, in addition to collaborating with CPI participants on new works.
The Composers Conference is an inclusive, collaborative environment that promotes exploration and invention. Female, trans, non-binary, queer, and musicians of color are strongly encouraged to apply. Our aim is to create a musical utopia for exceptional emerging composers that cultivates, creates, and performs the best contemporary music with the highest artistic standards.
There is NO application fee for the 2020 Composers Conference. Accepted composers will receive a Fromm Foundation Scholarship, which covers tuition and accommodations in full.
2020 FROMM FOUNDATION COMPOSER FELLOWS SELECTION PROCESS
Due to the high number of applications for the 2020 Composers Conference, composers will not be notified of the results of the application adjudication until after March 9, 2020. The Fromm Foundation Composer Fellows selection process is multi-staged. Each applicant may submit up to two pieces; These pieces should reflect the work that the applicant feels best represents their aesthetic vision and skill. The selection committee is comprised of the Guest Composers and the Artistic Director. The Guest Composers will be in charge of the selection process. The Artistic Director will give general feedback and input, and in cases when a decision needs to be made in the event of a tie.
Prior to STAGE 1, a pre-screening process will make sure all applications are complete. Incomplete applications will be ineligible for review.
STAGE 1 of the process is anonymous. All applicants and their materials are assigned a number for STAGE 1. The committee decides which applicants will move onto STAGE 2 based on the musical materials submitted.
The identities of the applicants are revealed to the committee at STAGE 2. At this point, the committee creates a pool of their top applicants to move onto the final stage of the selection process.
STAGE 3 involves the committee selecting 10 Composer Fellows and 2 Alternates. In no particular order, selection is based on factors including:
-the quality of work submitted,
-the value of Conference participation and experience based on the stage in applicant's creative life,
-representation and inclusion.
